The Boat Shoe
The Boaters Designer Shoe
The term boat shoe or deck shoe were originally designed to be a sturdy shoe that offers particularly good traction on wet slippery decks.

The boat shoe design was actually modeled after a shoe the Native Indian Americans created: the moccasin. The classic boat shoe and the moccasin had most of the same requirements, they had to have
the flexibility of on-shore and in- or near-water resiliency. If you look close at the construction of the boaters shoe and the moccasin you find that they both carry similar traits. They both are made so that they are low cut and some what water- resistant. By being low cut they are easy to get on and off.
The boaters shoe became a status symbol as much a piece of functional boating gear. The boat shoe
fashion became popular with people from all walks of life, even though many of the people waring the
a boating shoe style had never been aboard a boat in there entire life. So today the designer boat shoe has become as much a style of shoe as it is a functional part boating attire with a big difference between a boating shoe that was designed for sailing or boating and a shoe that was styled after a far superior shoe.
A good pair of boat shoes should be comfortable and fit snug. Your foot should not move back and forward or should it move side to side and yet you should have room in the toe box so your foot is not cramped. Most likely the most important part of a deck shoe or a boat shoe is the sole. This type of shoe should have a lot of grip and not slide when you plant your foot down on that slippery deck. These
shoes sometimes come with laces but mostly not, because they are designed to be easy to slip on and off.
Most high quality boat shoes are made of leather or canvas and can be treated with waterproofers and conditioners specifically made to protect the quality of the shoe.
Boat shoes from a view of fashion can be categorized as sport-casual footware. You would not see them around the office as much as you would see them on the beach or at the tennis club since boat shoes are not considered a dress shoe.
When buying a mens boating shoe or a womans boating shoe always try both feet on a walk around a little, test the grip on a non carpeted surface and see how good the traction is. Make sure your feet are
comfortable and the shoes are not to tight.
